Life
as we all say is a precious gift from God but I am adding to this that Life is
a rented gift from God. Am I funny? I understand that the famous and generally
agreed quotes/norms are always considered as right by most of us. But you need
to be unique by taking a second and if possible, a third thought on issues.
What
do we call a gift? The Oxford dictionary calls it something that is given to
another voluntarily without a charge/payment.
Rent
is payment for use of an equipment, property or service; we can also call it
‘lease’.
With
this misconception and misuse of language by calling life a gift, we have felt
that our life belongs to us. So we wake up as if it is by our power, work as if
it’s by might, we live as if we own ourselves. We all know that a gift is
different from a rented item. When a Toyota Camry 2014 model is given to you as
a gift, you are not expected to report to the giver on how you use the car
because it is automatically yours.
Meanwhile,
when a Toyota Camry 2014 model is rented, you make sure it is used carefully
because whether you like it or not, you will have to return the car and if
anything goes wrong, you are obliged to give a detail report of what happens.
I
believe you are coming to terms with me on this issue, Life is not just a gift:
It is rented! From the first day we had our first breathe; we accept God’s
terms and conditions on Life rentage. We agreed that at the end of usage, we
are going to give account of how well we have used it. Do you know what happens
when a tenant refuses to pay his rent and the landlord is an army general?
Please do not imagine because we could start crying in advance for that tenant.
We all are debtors to the Almighty God and the only way to pay back what he
gave us is by living and fulfilling his purpose with our rented lives.
If
life was totally a gift, there wouldn’t be need for judgement. If life was a
gift, God would not be concerned with what you do with it. If life was a gift,
then your body would have been yours and not God’s temple! A rented house still
belongs to the Landlord; he can demand use of it anytime.
The
next time someone tells you life is a gift from God, look at him and say, I am
living a rented life, My life is not mine. I live for God. I am accountable for
anything I do with my rented life.
Deep thought:
Am I
using my life to fulfil God’s purpose? What would I tell God when I die? Will
God call me a life waster? When I go back to my maker, will I have enough to
cover up for life’s rentage? Or would I be treated like a tenant who refused to
pay up his rent? Would I be thrown into a place of gnashing of teeth for misuse
of life?
I
would like to tell you more about our rented lives in the next part but before
then, Live accountable, gather enough for your rent!
